Gallery @49 is pleased to present the first
solo exhibition with the gallery of Korean born
artist Victor Jung-Han Lee, opening on June
10, 2003. The exhibition includes a series of
self-portraits developed by Jung-Han Lee over
the past two years, along with a selection of
landscape and still-life watercolors.
In
his “Self-Portraits” project Jung-Han
Lee operates suggestively with our perception
of the outside world, its structures, colors,
forms, illusions and clichés. Both grotesque
and humorous, the self is presented in various
mundane everyday guises and is placed in spatially
and visually demanding confrontations, challenging
the viewer to respond. Colors are applied at
full intensity with broad brushstokes or in
flat areas reinforcing the impression of immediacy.
The artist restricts himself almost entirely
to a caricatured realism, combining aspects
of popular culture with those of classical portraiture,
Expressionism, art brut, high and low, realism,
gestural painting and flat masses of brilliant
colors. Jung-Han Lee’s compositions conjure
up independent worlds in which personal experiences,
memories and inventions intermingle in a conscious
balancing act between cultural triviality and
emotion.
Jung-Han
Lee’s exhibition will be on display from
June 10 through June 30, 2003. A reception for
the artist will be held on Tuesday, June 10
from 6 to 8 PM.
