GALLERY@49 is pleased to announce the opening
of Librado Romero's first solo exhibition at
the gallery, entitled Obscure Occurrences.
The exhibition will include the artist's most
recent acrylics and mixed media on canvas, wood
and paper, ranging in scale from the monumental
to the miniature. The show will open with a
public reception on Thursday, March 23 and will
be on view through April 23.
Proceeds from this exhibition will benefit the
I.R.C (International Rescue Committee). Like
a rare atlas of the heart, the art of Librado
Romero reveals a world of passionate journeys,
through public and private pathways. From the
colors, horizontal expanses and the dreams of
his native southwest, to the frenzied urban
dynamism of New York where he is the Chief Photographer
of the New York Times, to the shadowy emaciated
wraiths of warring Somalia and the magical stones
of the Irish countryside, the artist has been
able to distill the wonder and fears of his
experience.
Like any atlas, his works reveal many types
of terrain, but though the vantage points and
styles may change, they cover recognizably common
ground. For whatever their subjects, or perspectives,
they all reflect long and self-critical detours
deep into the human interior. Romero has crossed
his country many times, and has ventured deeply
into the world beyond. He has snapped hundreds
of images, and sketched thousands more. This
raw material has blended with his own rushing
rivers of fantasy to shape his distinctive paintings,
infusing them with the key elements of his life
and outlook, among them playfulness, religious
mystery, good humor and dread.
Librado
Romero's exhibition will be on view at Gallery@49
from March 23 through April 23, 2000. A reception
for the artist will be held Thursday, March
23rd from 6 to 9 PM. Gallery@49, is located
