Gallery@49 is pleased to present the first solo
exhibition with the gallery of Japanese artist
Nobuaki Yamanaka, opening on May 9, 2002. Entitled
“A Transparent Rhyme”, the exhibition
includes Yamanaka’s most recent mixed
media paintings and works on paper exploring
the viable relationship between the purely chromatic
abstract image and the spiritual self.
What Yamanaka is constantly seeking to capture
in his work is the degree in which abstraction,
whether attained through spontaneous gesture
or through deeply pondered expanses of modulated
color, provides a record of personal experience.
Often lyrical in tone, his compositions seem
to recover something of a spiritual space
where the purified consciousness is freed from
the troubled world
of matter.
The blue color is vibrantly present, evoking
both the ocean and the heavens above. Especially
in the monochromes, a sensuously lyrical and
tactile effect is based on the properties of
the medium itself. By combining Japanese pigment,
tempera and acrylic, Yamanaka has invented a
fragile-looking but in fact durable medium whose
matte, velvety finish like creates a plush and
light-absorbent surface. Nobuaki Yamanaka lives
and works in Tokyo, Japan. Since 1975, his work
has been exhibited in galleries in Italy, US
and Japan, as well as The Museum of Modern Art
Ibaraki, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tsukuba
Museum and Ueno Royal Museum. Nobuaki Yamanaka’s
exhibition will be on display from May 9 through
June 2, 2002. A reception for the artist will
be held on Thursday, May 9 from 6 to 8 PM.
