THE STRUCTURE OF ENERGY

Gallery
@49 is pleased to present “The Structure
of Energy”, the first solo exhibition
with the gallery of New York artist DAVID TOBEY,
opening on May 10, 2003. The exhibition will
include a selection from Tobey’s recent
acrylic paintings and welded steel sculptures
and will be on view through
June
7, 2003.
Tobey’s
works explore the synaesthetic relationship
between abstraction and music, the connection
between linear and musical rhythms. Music has
always played a major role in David Tobey’s
outlook on life and artistic inspiration. As
an accomplished violinist, he is particularly
interested in how to translate the wealth of
insight acquired from music into visual arts.
Tobey’s
paintings and sculptures are highly energetic
abstractions which incorporate lines and shapes
into an autonomous and rhythmical, but also
clearly structured whole. The apparent spontaneity
of compositional handling is the result of intensive
labor and continual reworking. His acrylic paintings
are animated configurations induced by music.
Colors themselves are living forces with their
own intrinsic “sounds”. The result
of both brushwork and pouring technique, Tobey’s
paintings fuse abstract expressionist and surrealist
imagery in which brilliant colors assert themselves
with forceful yet lyrical intensity. The linear
and color arrangements suggest a fluid movement,
in which every subtle turn or twist translates
into a personal narrative.
Maintaining
the same impression of delicate balance between
spontaneity and control, David Tobey’s
sculptures are created by assembling and welding
pieces of scrap metal into a variety of shapes,
some of which have architectural implications,
while others are anthropomorphic in feeling.
Joined at odd angles, their planes force the
observer to walk around the object in order
to take in a complex succession of very different
appearances, rather than one viewpoint.
David
Tobey lives and works in New Rochelle, NY. He
started painting since early childhood in his
father’s studio, the well known history
painter and muralist Alton Tobey. He is a graduate
from Juiliard and holds a Masters in Studio
Art from College of New Rochelle. “The
Structure of Energy” will be on display
from May 10 through June 7, 2003. A reception
including solo contemporary guitar performance
by Oren Fader will be held on Saturday, May
10 from 4 to 7 PM.
